What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
