This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.
Here's a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical biological terror, but within Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.
An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The story begins when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Nuanced Portrayals
A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.
Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
