Nevertheless the former Luton head coach - who played more than 100 of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is considered a leading contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the Wolves board as they start the process of appointing a fresh manager.
O'Neil is additionally emerging as a unexpected contender, although he would be a surprising appointment given he was sacked by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham United player is out of work which means Wolves would not need to provide any buyout fee.
