New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his decision to back Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after months of public tension between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned Cuomo, describing him as a “snake and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a new development, Mayor Adams changed his position, revealing he now plans to campaign alongside the former governor in communities where he holds significant backing.

“It's essential to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have experienced gentrification on how important this election is,” Adams stated.

Adams continued, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise in terms of gentrification and they have been overlooked in those areas, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.”

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been dominated by the competition between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose growing support has drawn interest globally and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democratic party.

During a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate his conservative opponent stated they would reject Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Months ago, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.

At an unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams answered reporters inquiring into the support announcement by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

This development came a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a heated candidate debate.
