The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
