Citizens have assembled around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in Gaza.

The assault resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled formal commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' representatives convened in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the provisions of the plan.

A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the talks indicated that an late session of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative said the day's discussions ended without significant progress, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.

He added that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet deliver any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to narrow the disparities between the two sides.

Essential Matters in Discussions

  • A lasting truce
  • The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid provision
  • Future administration of the territory

Public Sentiment

In the city's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - explained: "No place seems like home now and until every captive are released not a single person will be secure."

"After we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can commence rebuild," she concluded.

In front of the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement necessary for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be secure."

Research now regularly indicate that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens prefer the war to conclude in return for the liberation of the abducted.

Palestinian Situation

At the location of Nova festival, mourners assembled to remember the victims.

From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers reported the intense Israeli attacks persisted.

In the main city, attacks were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.

"As the night arrives, the dread arrives with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.

"We are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my youngest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Every second we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."

Health Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of that area indicated two more fatalities had been brought there. A person was died by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the southern area, medics reported.
