Former Down Under Politician Sentenced for Over Five Years for Criminal Acts

One-time Australian politician found guilty of sexually abusing two victims connected through professional activities has been sentenced to nearly six years in detention.

Legal Proceedings

The defendant, forty-four, was in custody since last summer after the court convicted him of sexually assaulting an individual and indecently assaulting another individual, in different occasions in 2013 and 2015.

The politician served the coastal town of the regional area in the state government from the year 2011. He resigned as a Liberal Party official when allegations emerged in 2021 but refused to quit parliament and won again in last year.

Judgment Information

Justice the court official took into account the defendant's condition of legal blindness in the ruling and concluded "no alternative punishment besides imprisonment is appropriate".

The defendant, who appeared via digital means at the judicial venue, will undergo at least three years and nine months in prison before he can seek parole.

Justice Shead declared the court needs to "deliver a strong warning to similar individuals that criminal acts such as this will be met with salutary penalties".

Case Background

She also said the convicted man had "evaded consequences for a decade and enjoyed a life free from a treatment or consequence for his crimes during that period".

Following the verdict, the individual initiated a failed appeal attempt to continue in his position and resigned just prior to the legislature could expel him.

Defense attorneys has previously said he aims to appeal the ruling.

Trial Evidence

The defendant's extended court case in the NSW District Court heard that he asked a drunk 18-year-old man to his property in 2013 and attacked him repeatedly, despite his attempts to resist.

Two years later, he raped a 24-year-old office worker at his property after an event at the legislature.

He had argued the later assault was fabricated, and that the additional accuser was confused about their interaction from the first incident.

The state's attorneys maintained that significant resemblances in the accounts of the two men, who were unacquainted with the other, proved they were being honest.

Court members debated for multiple days before delivering the findings of guilt.

His departure caused a by-election in the district in last fall, which was won by the opposition party.
